Framed image of the original school building.

The state of the school building was felt throughout the community as ceilings collapsed, roofs leaked, and classrooms were relocated. The historic building that housed generations of students, teachers, and culture was now falling victim to time and absent funding.

Pictured below are news clippings from the Austin Statesmen detailing these disasters that students and teachers were experiencing in the aging building.

An article headline read, "Water Causes Classroom Ceiling to Fall." This article discusses the ceiling collapse that occurred in a second-grade classroom at Metz in 1989. The destruction of Ms. Monica Lembinski's classroom is just one example of the state in which this historic school building was now in.

With the safety of their children in mind, the people of the community began to push for financial support. The school principal at the time, Jorge Louis Rodriguez, supported this civil action as he referred to the ceiling collapse as a perfect example as to why AISD's 80 million dollar bond issue should be passed.
