For over seventy years, the original Metz school building served its surrounding community and acted as a place of learning and communal activity for many. However, in the late 1980s, the needs of the larger, more modern community were not being met by the school building that was now falling into disrepair.
Due to inadequate funding and support, members of the Metz community sought to have their voices heard through protest. Many were angered by the lack of school board involvement and prioritization that Metz and its community were all facing. Members of the protest depicted above sought to increase awareness of the school's state and advocate for immediate action by the school board who many felt were neglecting the needs of this predominantly Hispanic community.
In 1989, for the first time in the district's history, a bond proposal was rejected by the voters. Following this lapse in support, AISD officials and community members worked on a new $80 million dollar bond package. Once again, the decision fell to the board and the voters, but this time the voices of the Metz community would be heard as the bond passed and the planning of Metz's structural future began.
